Nigel Nicholson is the Walter Mintz Professor of Greek, Latin and Mediterranean Studies at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. He received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, and his BA from Oxford University.

His research circles around athletics, medicine, and Sicily, particularly focusing on the poetry that was produced to celebrate athletic champions. He is the author of three books: Aristocracy and Athletics in Archaic and Classical Greece (Cambridge University Press, 2005), The Poetics of Victory in the Greek West: Epinician, Oral Tradition and the Deinomenid Empire (Oxford University Press, 2016), and The Rhetoric of Medicine (Oxford University Press, 2019), jointly authored with Dr. Nathan Selden of Oregon Health & Science University. He also edited a special Paedagogus Section for Classical World in 2015 on Literary Theory in Graduate and Undergraduate Classics Curricula. Current projects include a book on Greek athletics aimed at a broader undergraduate audience. From 2013 to 2020, he served as the Dean of Faculty for Reed College, its Chief Academic Officer, and from 2005 to 2006 as President of the Classical Association of the Pacific Northwest.

Deeply committed to the liberal arts model of education and to the teaching of undergraduates, he was named Oregon’s Professor of the Year for 2005 by the Carnegie Foundation.
