You will need to do a double take when you see the rates. These rates were negotated back in 2018 by our very own President, during very different times. It is simply not possible to attain such fabulous rates nowadays for a quality venue like the Fairmont, which offers the same rooms now at nearly four times what we will have to pay.

Dr. Phil Taussky and his committee have organized a brilliant program, with both seasoned member and new member candidate speakers covering a wide range of neurosurgical topics. In particular, there will be mini symposia on cerebrovascular conditions and spine trauma. We will also be celebrating the 2022 Cloward medalist, Dr. Gary Steinberg, who has pioneered restorative neurosurgery, bringing lab based research to clinical trials. The second Prolo lecturer will also be very exciting as we welcome the first classicist to address our society on professionalism and ethics. Dr. Nigel Nicholson, from Reed College, will give a unique perspective of how the classical world still informs us to this day. In addition, we will be transported out of this world by our local interest lecturer, Dr. John O’Meara, Chief Scientist of the Keck Observatory that sits atop Maunakea on the Big Island. His lecture promises to delight and inspire us all. As usual, the meeting is jointly provided with the AANS and attendees will be eligible for CMEs.

Outside of the scientific program, there will be ample time at last to catch up with old friends and make new ones. We know that it has not been easy during the pandemic and for many, this may well be your first scientific meeting since the pandemic started. It is good to interact in person once again. There are ample opportunities to have fun with family and friends around the resort and on the Island. Activities abound at the resort and we have also negotiated special prices for WNS group activities on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons (9/10 & 9/11), including a private charter to sail the Pacific Ocean, anchoring in a particularly beautiful spot for snorkelling, helicopter rides around the Big Island, gentle guided hikes that highlight the Island’s past and immersing in Hawaiian culture through hands on arts and craft lessons.

We have no doubt that the 68th annual meeting will be engaging and exhilarating. It will also be special as it will be the first meeting for probably most members without the presence of our dear friend, Dr. Randy Smith. We will be celebrating the life of this remarkable man, sage marshal of the society, and friend to all. We are honored that Mrs. Florence Smith and fellow member, daughter of Randy, Dr. Christine Smith, will be able to come and help us pay tribute to Randy.
