Arthur L. Day, MD, Professor, Co-Chairman , and Residency Program Director of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Florida, graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School in 1972 and completed his neurological surgery residency training at the University of Florida in 1977. After a fellowship in brain tumor immunology at UF, he joined the neurosurgery faculty in 1978. In August 1988, Dr. Day was promoted to Professor, and in 1990, he was appointed the James and Newton Eblen Eminent Scholar Chair in Cerebrovascular Surgery.

An attending staff physician at Shands Teaching Hospital and a consulting physician for both the Gainesville Veterans Administration Hospital and the University of Florida Athletic Department, Dr. Day’s clinical interests are in cerebrovascular disease and sports medicine. His research activities focus on cerebral ischemia and protection. Dr. Day has gained international recognition in medicine for his innovative work in refining techniques for treating aneurysms and other cerebrovascular disorders. Aneurysms that were once considered untreatable because of their difficult-to-reach location are now being treated successfully in almost all cases.

Dr. Day is a frequent lecturer to the medical students and residents within the medical education curriculum in the UF Medical School and Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Day has published over a hundred journal articles and book chapters and has delivered numerous presentations in the United States and abroad. As a visiting professor, he has taught at more than twenty universities and health institutions, both nationally and internationally. Dr. Day currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, Neurosurgery, and Operative Techniques in Neurosurgery, and has been cited in Best Doctors in America.

An active member of numerous international, national, state, and local committees and societies, Dr. Day has served as president of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, the Congress of the Neurological Surgeons, the Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/CNS, the Sports Medicine Section of the AANS/ CNS, and the Alachua County Medical Society. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgery and has also recently been appointed as a director on the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
